Geibl Kata sorozatának középpontjában művészet és tudomány összetett viszonya áll: az a folyamat, amikor a fotográfia segítségével rögzíthetővé válnak a különböző, szabad szemmel nem látható tudományos folyamatok. A legújabb technológiai felfedezéseknek köszönhetően a korábbi felmérhetetlen távolság az univerzum jelenségeivel kapcsolatban folyamatosan csökken és mintha egyre közelebb kerülnénk egykor megismerhetetlen történésekhez. Geibl Kata sorozata Sziszüphosz mitológiai alakján keresztül, – akit a görög istenek arra a büntetésre ítéltek, hogy egy hatalmas kőtömböt kell az örökkévalóságig felfelé gurítania egy hegyoldalon – mintha az ezzel kapcsolatos szkepszist fogalmazná meg: az emberi megismerés korlátai akkor is megmaradnak, ha számos törekvés irányul afelé, hogy a világban zajló folyamatokat megértsük és az azokról való tudást elsajátítsuk.

A sorozat megidéz egyfajta időn kívüliséget: nem eldönthető, mikor készültek a munkák, ahogy az sem, hogy beállított, konstruált vagy elkapott jelenetekről van-e szó. Geibl Kata elbizonytalanítja a nézőt, ahogy az ismerősnek ható, a tudomány reprezentációs tereit – egyetem, kutatóközpont, laboratórium, múzeum – dokumentarista stílusban bemutató fotóin fikciós stratégiákat alkalmaz, mint amilyen például a történetmesélés gesztusa. Ahogy a művész fogalmaz, a Sziszüphosz sorozatban egy „képzeletbeli laboratóriumot hoz létre, ahol a befogadóra van bízva, hol húzódik a határ fikció és valóság között.” A képek erősségét ez az eldönthetetlenség, a világos határok elmosódása adja, amelyet Geibl Kata az analóg fotográfiai eljárások magabiztos használatával és olyan megoldásokkal valósít meg, mint például a hosszú expozíciós idő, vagy a multiexpozíció. Mindehhez többletjelentést ad az is, hogy munkáinak középpontjában épp a digitális képalkotás okozta változás és napjaink képáradata áll.

Sisyphus
The first solo exhibition of photographer Kata Geibl

In the center of Kata Geibl’s series stands the complex relationship between art and science: the development, when with the help of photography, the invisible scientific processes could be documented. Because of the newest technological discoveries, the previously incomprehensible distance between us and the universe started to reduce and it seems that we are getting closer and closer to understand situations which were previously unknown. Kata Geibl’s series evokes the figure of Sisyphus from Greek mythology, who was punished for eternity, to roll a giant stone upon a hill, which always falls back. Using the figure of Sisyphus as a metaphor, the artist points out a certain skepsis regarding that despite our constant effort to understand the processes happening in the world and to gain new knowledge, the limits of human cognition remain.

The series evoke the notion of being out of time: it is not clear, when the photos were taken and whether we see a staged situation or a momentary scene. Kata Geibl makes the
viewer uncertain as she uses fictional strategies, like storytelling, in her documentarist photos, which are depicting places usually associated to scientific knowledge, like university, museum, laboratory, research center. As the artist said, “in series Sisyphus, I constructed an imaginary laboratory where it’s up to the viewer to decide where the line lies between fiction and reality.” What gives the images strength is this undecidable quality and how it blurs previously distinct borders. The artist achieves this through her confident use of analog techniques and solutions like long exposure time or multiexposure. That in the center of her work lies the changes digital image making generates and the notion of the flow of images in our present, adds an extra
meaning to the usage of the above mentioned analog techniques.

Kata won the Paris Photo Carte Blanche Student Award and was a finalist at Breda Photo Talent Program in 2018.
