Kitalált igaz családtörténetek / Invented True Family Stories

A sokszor poszt-igazság címkével jelzett korunkban, amikor a történelem és fikció régi ellentétpárja már végképp nem tartható fenn, a fényképek átalakítása és manipulálása magától értetődő, majdhogynem természetes velejárója az események illusztrálásának. Ennek ellenére a fénykép médiumra ösztönösen, mint egyfajta hitelesítési stratégiára gondolunk, mely igazolja egy személy vagy egy esemény érvényességét. Nehezünkre eshet elvonatkoztatni attól a gondolattól, hogy fotózni csak azt lehet, ami van, noha a fotó manipulálása, elő- vagy utómunkálatok révén, egyidős a technika felfedezésével. A mesterkedés célja bizonyos esetekben, hogy a módosítások segítségével egy valódi történetnek az igazsághoz, a valósághoz hűségesebbnek vélt képét nyújtsa, melyre részben akkor szorulhatott az alkotó, amikor a felvétel készítésekor nem voltak adottak a megfelelő körülmények, esetleg a kép irreleváns részletei megzavarták, elvonták a figyelmet a lényeges részekről, vagy egyszerűen a valóságra csak utóbb derült fény. Ugyanez igaz a privát céllal készült családi fényképek esetére is: a kezdetekre visszavezethető, hogy a beállítások, a kompozíciók kulturálisan meghatározott konvenciókat tükröztek, melyek előttünk esetleg láthatatlan igazságokat takartak.

A Kitalált igaz családtörténetek kiállításon Csáky Marianne, Esterházy Marcell és Tranker Kata e tárlatra készült új alkotásai láthatók. Mindhármuk eddigi munkásságában meghatározó szerepet játszott a magánjellegű, saját vagy talált családi fotók felhasználása és fotó-alapú munkáikban e fotók digitális vagy mechanikai átalakítása. A jelen kiállításon bemutatott valamennyi mű lezárt anyaghalmazra épül: fekete-fehér archív fotók és mozgóképek átalakításával nyerik el formájukat.
Műveikkel a fotó pillanatnyiságát helyesbítik, a kronológiát vagy a családon belüli szerepeket igazítják, kimaszkolják a lényegtelen elemeket, hogy a fotó dokumentumszerű jellegét segítségül hívva igaz történeteket találjanak ki.

In this day and age, which is often labelled with the tag “post-truth,” when the old dichotomy between history and fiction no longer exists, the transformation and manipulation of photographs might seem self-evident, an almost natural concomitant of illustrating events. Nonetheless, our
postmodern savvy notwithstanding, we still almost instinctively regard the medium of photographyas a kind of authentication strategy, which verifies the presence or existence of a person or the occurrence of an event. We perhaps find it difficult to set aside the idea that only what exists can be photographed, even if the manipulation of photography, whether pre- or postproduction, is as old as the technology itself. In certain cases, the goal of such manipulation is to present a more faithful image of an actual event, of the (alleged) truth. The creator/artist is sometimes inclined to revert to
the use of these kinds of transformations if the necessary circumstances were not given at the time the photograph was made or irrelevant details disturbed or diverted attention from the significant motifs or, simply, reality only came to light afterwards. The same holds true for family photographs
made with a private function: the fact that the poses and the compositions reflected socially determined conventions can be traced back to the very beginnings of photography, a medium which (thus) may conceal invisible truths from us.

The exhibition Invented True Family Stories presents new works by Marianne Csáky, Marcell Esterházy and Kata Tranker. All three artists have created several works in which they used private family photographs – found or their own – and transformed them either digitally or mechanically. Each work presented at this exhibition is built on a final set of materials: they have been given form through the alteration of black-and-white archival photographs and moving images. With their works, the artists rectify the instantaneity of photographs, adjust the chronology or the roles within a family, mask superfluous elements and, by using the documentary-like quality of the photograph, invent true stories.
