Psychologist Judy Weiser: How photos can be used to help people: Introduction to PhotoTherapy and Therapeutic Photography Techniques
Judy Weiser, Founder and Director of the PhotoTherapy Centre in Vancouver, Canada — and considered the world authority about the use of photo-based interventions (“PhotoTherapy Techniques”) to help people improve their lives — will talk about the “what, how, and why” of these techniques, and then explain their relevancy for the interactions evoked between photographers, the photos they take, and people’s responses to those pictures (especially when viewed in Galleries!)
Judy Weiser (R.Psych., A.T.R., Founder & Director of the PhotoTherapy Centre, in Vancouver Canada) is a Psychologist, Art Therapist, Consultant, Educator, Trainer, University Adjunct Faculty, International Lecturer, and Author — and one of the earliest pioneers of PhotoTherapy, Therapeutic Photography, Photo-Art-Therapy, VideoTherapy, and other related techniques. Founder and Director of the PhotoTherapy Centre in Vancouver, Canada, she is considered the world authority on the emotional significance of personal photographs.
In December 2019, eight artists were invited to explore and present the notion of cure through new works, mainly via the medium of photography, for the exhibition Cure (on view after the re-opening of the Capa Center). They sought to answer questions, such as: which are the small steps that can help individuals to maintain their mental health, and what are the possible solutions for smaller or larger communities, and society as a whole to recover from the problems caused by crisis, anxiety, and burn-out?
The Mirror. Psychology, Analysis, and Photography is a series of online lectures that delve into the theoretical aspects of these issues. As part of the program series accompanying the exhibition, the invited lecturers –Péter Forgács, Anna Gács, Anikó Illés, Monika Perenyei, Judy Weiser– reflect on the psychological, self-knowledge, autobiographical or analytical aspects of photography. (Judit Gellér, curator)
