The exhibition at the Liszt Institute in Ljubljana presents portrait photographs of the greats of Hungarian literature.

The exhibition “Fragments” is a testimony to Demeter Balla’s love of literature, as he captured the best Hungarian writers and poets of the 20th and 21st century. From Sándor Weöres, through Zoltán Zelkand Magda Szabó to Péter Nádas, the greats of Hungarian literature come to life in the black and white photographs of the photographer.

Demeter Balla (1931-2017) was born near Szentes. As a self-taught photographer he started taking photographs in 1951, obtained his photographer’s certificate in 1957 and in the same year he took a job at the Budapest Photographic Company. His photographs soon attracted attention and he worked regularly for magazines and book publishers. His pictures won prizes at several international exhibitions and he received numerous awards for his work.
