“Már több mint negyven éve csodálom azt a különleges életformát, amely a modern Jeruzsálem belvárosától mindössze néhány sarokra lévő városnegyedet jellemzi. A negyed utcáin sétálva olyan érzés fog el, mintha egy időutazáson vennék részt, és a 19. századi Kelet-Európában találnám magam. A kiállításom egy virtuális sétára hívja Önöket, hogy bepillantást nyerjenek az ultraortodox Mea Shearim utcáin található rejtett, hagyományőrző vallási és kulturális életmód hétköznapjaiba. A fényképek által feltárulnak a Mea Shearimban élők legtermészetesebb, számunkra mégis kuriózumként élő pillanatai: etrog vásárlás szukkotkor, vagy zsinagógába való sétálás pénteken.

Ez a munka szeretetből készült. Ezek az emberek és az életmódjuk a saját gyerekkoromra emlékeztetnek. Ahogy elkapom a fényképezőmmel ezeket a pillanatokat Mea Shearimban, egyszerre újraélem őket gyerekkorom Magyarországán.”

“For more than 40 years I have been interested in the special lifestyle that characterizes a distinctive neighborhood in the center of modern Jerusalem. Standing in its streets is like going back in time and space – facing visions that were common in Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century and which now seems incongruent with the Jerusalem of today. Taking a walk through the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea She’arim is a rare opportunity for immersion into a fascinating religious and cultural phenomenon driven by its people who live the lifestyle of their forefathers. Very little has changed.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity to take a virtual walk through this special neighborhood, and interact with those small moments when people are at ease in their own environment- whether it is selling etrogs in the market for Sukkot, or walking to Synagogue on Friday.
This work has been a labor of love. I was drawn to these special people and their way of life because they reminded me of my childhood. In a way, my capturing of the everyday lives of the people in Mea She’arim with my camera, has been my attempt to recapture those memories of my community in Hungary.”
