Meglepő a Budapesti éjszaka című fotóalbum megjelenési dátuma: 1961. A város még alig heverte ki a háború pusztítását, a diktatúra nyomorúságát, s újbóli szétlövetését a Forradalomra válaszként. És egy fotográfus a világváros fényeit, forgalmát, vibrálását rögzíti kamerájával. Érdemes elgondolkodni ezen: akkor készültek a fotográfiák, amikor újra optimizmus járta át Budapestet. A presszók és bárok működtek, a főutakon ostornyeles neonlámpák égtek, a Várban andalogni lehetett. A lakosok abban bíztak, hogy túl vannak a nehezén.

A fotós is ezt érezte, amikor estéről estére elindult, hogy épp a megfelelő fényeket, az alkalmas expozíciót találja meg gondosan mérlegelt képi beállításihoz. Vallomás ez a könyv, egy alkotó, egy kor reménykedése: rosszabb már nem lesz. Távolról nézve Czeizing Lajos hibátlan képei az éjszakai városfotózás Brassaï óta tartó széles áramlatához tartoznak, közelnézetben azonban költőiségükből egy másik történet is kibontakozik: „Itt van a város, vagyunk lakói, maradunk itt, neve is van: Budapest.”

Czezing Lajos (1922–1985) a háború utáni modern fotográfia elfelejtett nemzedékének jelentős tagja. Budapesten született, járt a Zeneakadémiára, emellett azonban textiltechnológusi végzettséget szerzett. 1945-től a Győri Textilművek egyik alapítója, főtechnológusa és a városi zenekar első hegedűse volt. A pártba nem lépett be, magánbeszélgetéseiben kifejezetten ellenségesen viseltetett a rendszerrel. Tizenkét éves kora óta fotózott, első fényképezőgépe egy házi készítésű kihuzatos kamera volt. Gyakran küldött képeket hazai és nemzetközi kiállításokra, számos alkalommal díjazták. 1967-ben a budapesti Fényes Adolf Teremben, 1979-ben a Műcsarnokban, 1985-ben a Vigadó Galériában rendezett önálló kiállítást.

1954-től az akkor szervezett Képzőművészeti Alap Kiadóvállalatánál főként turisztikai fotókat és városképeket készített, sokat járta az országot, megtakarított pénzéből külföldre utazott. Fotóihoz egy Linhof volt az „alapgépe”, a kisebb formátumokhoz Praktisixet, illetve később Bronicát használt. 1970-ben önállósította magát a reklámfotó területén. Nyolc fotóalbuma jelent meg, de számos további könyvet és naptárt is illusztráltak a felvételeivel. Önmagát szívesen nevezte fotóillusztrátornak. 1973-ban Balázs Béla-díjjal, 1981-ben Érdemes művész címmel tüntették ki.

The date of publishing the photo album titled Budapesti éjszaka [Budapest at Night, 1961] is rather surprising. The capital had barely recovered from the destruction of World War II, the torment inflicted by the dictatorship and the city being assailed by bullets yet again, in response to the Revolution of ’56. And here is a photographer capturing the bright lights, bustle and vibrations of a metropolis. One is bound to note: these photos were taken when optimism returned to Budapest. The small cafés and bars had re-opened, neon-lights lined the main roads and people were again able to amble in the Castle district. The inhabitants of the city were hopeful that the worst was over.

The photographer must have shared their sentiment when he set off every night to record the best light conditions and the optimal exposure for his precisely composed images. This album comes from the heart, reflecting the hopes of an artist and an entire era: nothing worse will come. Taking a few steps back, Lajos Czeizing’s flawless pictures form part of the broad trend of nocturnal urban photography, which had started with Brassaï. However, upon a closer look, another story is unfolding in these lyrical images: “Here is a city, we are her inhabitants and we are staying here; this city has a name: Budapest.”

Lajos Czeizing (1922–1985), born in Budapest, is a prominent figure of the forgotten generation of modern, post-war photographers. He attended the Liszt Academy, while also completing a degree in textile technology. He was one of the co-founders of the Győr Textile Works in 1945, where he worked as the senior technological expert, while also being the first violinist of the local classical orchestra. He did not join the communist party, and in his private conversations expressed his antagonism to the regime. He started taking photographs at the tender age of twelve, when he used a home-made folding camera. He often submitted his photographs to domestic and international exhibitions, for which he won numerous prizes. He had important solo shows in Budapest: in the Fényes Adolf Hall in 1967, in the Műcsarnok/Kunsthalle in 1979 and in the Vigadó Gallery in 1985.

From 1954 he worked for the recently organised Képzőművészeti Alap Kiadóvállalat [Fine Arts Fund Publishing Company], where he chiefly took photographs for tourism and cityscapes. He travelled extensively in Hungary and managed to go abroad with the money he saved up. His ‘primary camera’ was a Linhof, while he first used a Praktisix and later a Bronica for his small-format pictures. He set up his own business in 1970 and worked in the area of commercial photography. He had eight albums published but his photographs illustrate numerous other volumes and calendars. Indeed, he liked to refer to himself as a photo-illustrator. His work was recognised with the Béla Balázs Award in 1973 and the Meritorious Artist Award in 1981.

Czeizing made mocks for his albums, using the enlargements he had made himself. The vintage copies displayed at this exhibition are from the mock he made for his album Budapesti éjszaka.
