Anasztázia Horosilova: Once the sea was here [Régen itt volt a tenger]

A színhely a Turgenyev által is megidézett orosz vidék és táj, a Bezsin-rét (Bezsin Lug), amely Szergej Eisenstein legendás filmjének címét is kölcsönözte. Ide tér vissza mintegy 12 év elteltével Anasztázia Horosilova, hogy felkeresse a kétezres évek elején megörökített helyieket, akikben másfél évtizede még élt némi remény a jövőt illetően.

A Bezsin-rét a társadalmi változások és konfliktusok ábrázolásának szimbolikus helye az orosz kultúrában. Az Egy vadász feljegyzései 1852-es kiadását követően Turgenyevet lázítás vádjával egy évre családi birtokára száműzték és a könyv terjesztését is betiltották annak társadalomábrázolása miatt, az 1950-es évektől viszont mindmáig kötelező irodalom az iskolákban. Eisenstein filmjét 1937-ben még befejezése előtt betiltották, és az 1966-os részleges rekonstrukciójáig úgy hitték, hogy teljesen megsemmisült. A 20. század végén már nem a Gulág, hanem a széthulló Oroszország az élet metaforája Szorokin Regényében. Pjotr Aleskovszkij Крепость [Erőd] című regényének főhőse, a kispolgári „lúzer” képtelen megtalálni a helyét egy olyan társadalomban, ahol mindent a pénz és az összeköttetések határoznak meg.

Horosilova érzékenyen reflektál mind Turgenyev realizmusára mind Eisenstein montázstechnikát forradalmasító formanyelvére. Gondosan megkonstruált képein a táj, a valaha összetartó falusi közösség életének helyszínei, az emberi test csak fragmentumokban látható. Antropológus tekintettel vizsgálja a mindennapi életet, újrealista megközelítéssel ábrázolja a vidék társadalmának felbomlását. Vajon meddig képesek megőrizni belső erejüket a Bezsin-rét hátramaradt vesztesei? Van-e bármilyen jövője a vidéknek a mai Oroszországban?

ANASZTÁZIA HOROSILOVA, 1978-ban született Moszkvában, az esseni Folkwang Akadémián tanult fotográfiát. Művei számos kiállításon szerepeltek világszerte, köztük a Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2009), a Velencei Biennále (2011), a Kunsthaus Baselland (2012), a párizsi Maison Européenne de la Photographie (2014), a Haus der Berliner Festspiele (2017) rendezte egyéni kiállításokon. A Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia tanára. 2016-ban a DFA – Deutsche Fotografische Akademie tagjává választották.

The scene in Bezhin Meadow, a region in the Russian countryside, immortalized by Turgenev’s story and Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary film. This is where Anastasia Khoroshilova returns after twelve years to visit the locals she photographed in the early 2000s, who, back then, still harboured some hope about the future.

Bezhin Meadow is a symbolic place in Russian culture for the representation of social changes and conflicts. Following the 1852 publication of A Sportsman’s Sketches, Turgenev was convicted of instigating revolt, sentenced to one year of house arrest at his family’s estate, and the book was banned for the way it represented the society. Since the 1950s, however, it has been compulsory reading at schools. Eisenstein’s film was banned in 1937, before it was finished, and was believed to have been completely destroyed until it was partially reconstructed in 1966. By the end of the 20th century, in Sorokin’s Novel, it is not the Gulag that serves as a metaphor for life, but a disintegrating Russia. The hero of Peter Aleshkovsky’s novel, The Fortress, is a middle-class ‘loser’ who is incapable of finding his place in a society in which everything is decided by money and connections.

Khoroshilova reflects with sensitivity on both Turgenev’s realism and Eisenstein’s formal idiom, which revolutionized the montage technique. The surroundings, the places where the once close and loyal community used to live, the human body only appear in fragmented forms in her carefully constructed photos. She studies everyday life with the eyes of an anthropologist, and represents the disintegration of rural society with a new realistic approach. How long can the remaining losers of Bezhin Meadow preserve their inner power? Does non-urban Russia have any future today?

ANASTASIA KHOROSHILOVA, born in 1978 in Moscow, studied photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including the solo shows at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2009), Venice Biennale (2011), Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel (2012), Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris (2014), Haus der Berliner Festspiele (2017). She has been lecturer at the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia. In 2016 she became a member of DFA, the German Academy of Photography.
