Montier-en-Der and Giffaumont-Champaubert are located next to the “Lac du Der Chantecoq”, which is one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe (45 miles perimeter). All year long, the exceptional site welcomes more than 270 protected bird species and, during the Festival, thousands of migrating common cranes come to the lake. Many of them will winter in the region.

An international Event

This year 48 exhibitions with more than 1,300 photos will be presented. All the exhibitions are realized by professional and amateur photographers coming from all over the world.
Some of them can be mentioned. Stefano Unterthiner will present “Red Fox – Story of a mountain fox”. Lassi Rautiainen, Hannu Huttu, Pekka Helo and Markus Sirkka will illustrate “The Finnish fauna”. Daniel Magnin and David Grouard have photographed “The white-throated dipper” and “The forest in the rhythm of the seasons”. Yves Lanceau will show the subject “Mushrooms: taste, forms and colours”. Christophe Sidamon-Pesson will deal with the theme “Secret presence, holy moments”. Christine und Michel Denis-Huot will describe”The savannah with the passing seasons” and Michel Loup will show “Olho d’agua”. Serge Brunier will bring to light “Atacama, high deserts”. The exhibition “Bijagos, the forgotten archipelago” will be proposed by Jean-Francois Hellio and Nicolas Van Ingen. The Swiss Association of Naturalist Photographers (A.S.P.N.) will also be present. Lastly, BBC Wildlife Magazin and the Natural History British Museum of London will present “The Wildlife photographer of the year 2003”.

The site COSEC will deal with three themes: “The Lac du Der”, “The Clouds” and “Fauna und Flora on the five continents”. The scenography will sometimes be exceptional.

Sponsors and Guests of the Festival

During the previous years, Yann Arthus Bertrand, Art Wolfe, Jean-Louis Etienne, Philip Plisson and Hans Silvester were the sponsors and guests of honour of the festival. Through their photos, the visitors could not only travel and enter the passion of photography, but could also listen to fascinating stories about the beauty and the variety of the world. Michel Denis-Huot will be the sponsor of the 2004 edition and will make us know the new book he has written with Christine Denis-Huot: “The savannah with the passing seasons”.

This year, as the foreign guest of honour, the British photographer Andy Rouse will reveal his exhibition “Wildlife for ever” and the French photographer Christian Molitor will lead the visitors to the “Landscapes and lights of the world”. Sandrine Espitalier will be our 2004 revelation guest with “Snapshots: cotton moments”, a beautiful exhibition which is to look at upside down!

During the Festival of Montier-en-Der, young artists, such as Vincent Munier a few years ago, are constantly discovered.

Competitions

The prizes of the International Competition of Wildlife and Nature Photography were launched on last January 1st by AFPAN L”Or Vert” in partnership with the Club Léo Lagrange from Saint-Dizier and will be awarded during the Festival. The happy winners will earn more than 20,000 “. The Jury made of photo professionals as well as press and edition leaders will meet under the presidency of Yves Lanceau.

The “Special Youth photographic Competition intended for youth under twenty deals this year with the theme “The vegetal world” and the winners will receive significant awards during the festival.

Technological Innovations and Conferences

True to tradition, the last technological innovations in field of photo and optical equipment will be presented by different partners like Canon and FujiFilm in Giffaumont-Champaubert located on the shores of the “Lac du Der”.

Conferences will deal with, among other things, environment awareness through nature photography as well as the impact of sustainable development in nature preservation. Forums will also allow photo brands and photographers to confront their points of view about numeric photo.

Trade of the Book of Nature

The trade of the book of nature “Natura-lire” ranks among the biggest ones in France proposing all the new titles devoted to nature and photo nature. More than 2,250 books aimed at people of all ages are available.

The Festival Expands!

This year the Fondation Lucy Lebon, a former conference site, will present photographic exhibitions about the depths of the earth and the sea beds. Moreover, the former “Halle au blé” (Corn Market), a site of high heritage value which, after its restoration, opened to exhibitions last year, will be used at its maximum. Lastly, the new socio-cultural area offers a conference room which is equipped with a giant screen and can seat until 350 persons.

In a few years, the International Festival of Montier-en-Der has become the inescapable and convivial meeting place for wildlife and nature photography: all the professionals take part in the festival and the exhibitions are of high quality.

Its specificity lies in its organisation: it is managed by the association AFPAN L Or Vert” which mobilizes each year more than 250 voluntaries.

Lovers of beautiful pictures and dreams, come for many surprises and discoveries in Montier-en-Der on November 19, 20 and 21, 2004!
